The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) in BIliran handed-over mangrove seedlings and propagules to the local government unit of Kawayan in support to the LGU’s plan of creating a mangrove forest with boardwalk.
In partnership with the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Sta. Rita, PENRO Biliran provided some one thousand eight hundred (1,800) tangal seedlings and bakawan propagules to Kawayan. These planting materials were sourced from the 50-hectare mangrove Seed Production Area (SPA) in Brgy. Tinago, Calbiga, Samar maintained by CENRO Sta. Rita.
PENRO Biliran likewise spearheaded the planting of the mangrove seedlings and propagules in Kawayan, participated by volunteers from the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the local government unit, Philippine Army, and the local community.
The donation of mangrove planting materials and the planting activity initiated by PENRO Biliran was a response to Mayor Rudy J. Espina’s plan of creating a mangrove forest with boardwalk as discussed with former Biliran Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Eugenia N. Bautista.
“Mangrove benefits us all. They are extremely productive ecosystems providing first line of defense for coastal communities. They stabilize shorelines by slowing erosion and providing natural defense against strong waves and storm surge”, former PENRO Bautista said.
“DENR is always willing to support activities of the local government unit and any group or individual geared towards the protection of the environment and the safety of the community”, she added.
