DENR 8 releases a tarsier in Quinapondan ES
The DENR Region 8 released a tarsier locally known as 'mago' found by a local farmer in Quinapondan, Eastern Samar.
According to the farmer, the tarsier jumped towards him while he was doing his work in the field. He immediately reported the presence of the tarsier to the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO) of Quinapondan.
After the assessment of the staff from the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) and the Enforcement Division, the tarsier was immediately released back to the wild.
Based on DENR Administrative Order 2019-09 or the updated national list of threatened Philippine fauna and their categories, the Philippine Tarsier is categorized as Other Threatened Species. This means that the species is under threat from adverse factors such as overcollection and is likely to be moved to the vulnerable category in the near future.
The DENR reminds the public that under R.A. 9147 or the "Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act," it is unlawful for any person to willfully and knowingly exploit wildlife resources. This includes killing and destroying wildlife species, injuring and maltreating, collecting, hunting, or possessing wildlife, and trading them, among other prohibited acts.
