
The DENR Eastern Visayas in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President (OVP) Tacloban Sattelite Office, and the Local Government Unit of Matag-ob spearheaded a massive tree planting activity in support of the PagbaBAGo: A Million Learners and Trees Project.
Around one thousand volunteers from various government agencies, academe, civil society organizations, and the local government unit trooped to Brgy. Malazarte, Matag-ob Leyte to join the planting of five thousand (5,000) seedlings of indigenous species in an area that spans eleven hectares.
DENR 8 Regional Executive Director Lormelyn E. Claudio requested the volunteers to help the DENR in ensuring the growth and survival of the planted seedlings by taking part in maintenance and protection activities after the planting. She likewise encouraged the volunteers to act as influencers and support DENR’s mission of mobilizing the people in protecting, conserving, and managing the environment and natural resources for the present and future generations.
Mr. Richard E. De Jesus, Assistant Sattelite Lead of OVP Tacloban explained that under the project, twenty thousand seedlings will be planted each year throughout the region until 2028. This is part of VP Sara’s commitment to plant one million seedlings under the PagbaBAGo: A Million Learners and Trees Project. He added that a total of one hundred thousand (100,000) seedlings are expected to be planted in Region 8 by 2028 under the project.
Mayor Bernandino Tacoy of Matag-ob, Leyte thanked the OVP and DENR for including Matag-ob in the PagbaBAGo project and committed his full support to the endeavor, saying that the people of Matag-ob will ensure the sustainability of the project in their hometown for future generations.
The DENR entered into a memorandum of agreement with the OVP and DepEd for the PagbaBAGo: A Million Learners and Trees with OVP taking the lead in monitoring its implementation. This project also implemented in support of the government’s National Greening Program (NGP).
