DENR 8 Regional Executive Director Arturo E. Fadriquela and the Chief of the Conservation and Development Division of DENR Regional Office 8 Ms. Marissa Solite joined the Leyte Sab-a Basin Peatland Walk on World Wetlands Day, February 2, 2023.

With them in the 3-kilometer peatland walk were representatives from the People for Peat Coalition, the World Research Institute-Indonesia, Forest Foundation Philippines, Women Enablers Advocates & Volunteers for Empowering & Responsive Solutions (WEAVERS), and officials from the local government unit of Sta. The activity aims to promote the restoration, strengthen protection efforts, and deepen the connection of the stakeholders to the Leyte Sab-a Basin Peatland and the wetland ecosystem, in general.

The Leyte Sab-a Basin is composed of a series or system of swamps exhibiting unique landscape features. It has an estimated area of 3,088 hectares, a water catchment area in Leyte receiving water from various sources (springs, rivers, aquifers, and rainfall) in all direction. The area regularly supports large numbers of waterfowl, particularly herons and egrets, ducks, rails and gallinules, and some shorebirds.

The Leyte Sab-a Basin is located in the three barangays of the municipality of Alang-Alang, Leyte, namely: Brgy. Langit, Brgy. Divisoria, Brgy. Tabangohay, and in Brgy. San Isidro, municipality of Sta. Fe, Leyte.
