June 17 is World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought!
This year, we celebrate it with the theme, “Rising up from drought together,” which aims to highlight the need for early action to avoid disastrous consequences for humanity and the planetary ecosystems.
Droughts have always been a part of nature and the human experience but are now much worse largely due to human activity. They are considered one of the greatest threats to sustainable development, especially in developing countries. Forecasts estimate that by 2050, droughts may affect over one-third of the world’s population. Meanwhile, desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas. It is also caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations. (UN Environment Programme)
#DesertificationandDroughtDay is celebrated every June 17 of each year primarily to promote public awareness of the issue of desertification and drought. Also, it aims to let people know that desertification and drought can be effectively tackled, that solutions are possible, and that key tools to this aim lay in strengthened community participation and cooperation at all levels.
