“As we celebrate National Women’s Month Celebration (NWMC) 2020, it is an opportune time for us to highlight the many significant and pivotal role of women in our nation’s colorful history and that of the Department. Through the years, women have proven themselves time and again their contribution to nation-building,” says Regional Executive Director Tirso P. Parian, Jr., of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region VIII.
Spearheaded by the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) with the theme, “We Make Change Work for Women”, the DENR in the region kicked-off the month-long celebration with a zumba activity and a short program to honor the sacrifices and invaluable contribution of women-employees of the Department in the implementation and attainment of its various programs and projects.
The DENR in the region is a testament of the significant role of women in nation building with many of them occupying managerial positions. In the regional office alone, the Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services position is occupied by a woman, in her concurrent capacity as Division Chief. This is on top of four (4) other women Division Chiefs out of the eight (8) divisions within the regional office. Likewise, 33% or 2 of 6 Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officers (PENROs) are women, and 18% or 2 of 11 Community Environment and Natural Resources Officers (CENROs) are also women. In the province of Eastern Samar, the PENR Officer and its two (2) CENR Officers are all women.
For this year’s celebration, the DENR National Gender and Development Focal Point System also adopted the theme, “Women can make CHANGE in Climate and Disaster Resiliency”.
Taking into account Eastern Visayas as prone to natural disasters compounded by the destructive effects of climate change, women are challenged to be at the forefront of climate and disaster actions. “It is the commitment of the DENR to push for the equal and active participation of women in addressing issues on the environment, climate change, and disaster risk reduction confronting them”, RED Parian says.
To strengthen DENR-women employees’ participation, slated to be conducted are training workshop on Gender and Development and lectures on violence against women as embodied in R.A. 9262 or “An Act Defining Violence Against Women and their Children, Providing for Protective Measures for Victims, Prescribing Penalties therefore, and for Other Purposes”.
