In celebration of the #2023WorldOceansDay, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Eastern Visayas spearheaded a coastal clean-up activity at the UP Botanical area along Magsaysay Boulevard, Tacloban City on June 8, 2023.
More than 130 volunteers joined the clean-up which was composed of participants from the Philippine National Police Regional Maritime Unit (PNP-RMU), Philippine Coast Guard- Tacloban City, City ENRO personnel, ENR Ambassadors from JJC Waraynon, and DENR personnel from the Regional Office, CENRO Palo, Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).
Thirty nine (39) sacks of wastes with an estimated volume of 500 kilos comprising mostly of single-use plastics , food packaging materials such as styrofoam and plastic wrappers and rubber materials like tires were collected in the clean-up.
In his message, DENR Eastern Visayas OIC-Regional Executive Director, Arturo Fadriquela said that "Malasakit" and "Disiplina" are needed from the public in order to contribute to the worldwide conservation and restoration efforts for our oceans.
The United Nations celebrates World Oceans Day every year on June 8. This year's theme, "Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing, " highlights the importance of conserving and restoring our oceans as well as reiterate the need to ensure the sustainable management of our coastal and marine ecosystems.
The clean-up was part of the nationwide simultaneous coastal clean-up activity organized by the DENR Central office as part of the global celebration.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Eastern Visayas participated in the nationwide simultaneous coastal clean-up drive and tree planting activity on June 5 in celebration of the 2023 World Environment Day.
In Tacloban City, the DENR Region 8 officials and employees led by Regional Executive Director Arturo Fadriquela including the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) gathered to spearhead the clean-up along Quezon Boulevard and Tacloban CityMarket.
Other participants who volunteered to join came from McDonald's Rizal, SaveMore, Jollibee Food Corporation, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. (Anibong Joint Operation Terminal), Petron Corp. (Tacloban Terminal), PhilPost (Tacloban Central Post Office), Philippine Ports Authority (Tacloban), Philippine Coast Guard (Tacloban Market Site), Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers, JJC Leytean and other organizations.
Around 400 kilograms of waste which comprises mostly of plastics were collected at that event.
Meanwhile, a tree planting activity was also held in other areas within the region spearheaded by the field offices in coordination with partner stakeholders.
June 5 has been designated as World Environment Day (WED) pursuant to the UN General Assembly, Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. This year, the significant event will emphasize the need to address the issue of plastic pollution as part of the overarching international campaign.
The DENR Regional Office 8 and its field offices in Southern Leyte, together with the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), conducted information, education, and communication (IEC) activities at the Tomas Oppus Pilot School in Maasin and San Juan Central Elementary School in San Juan, Southern Leyte in celebration of the Month of the Planet Earth.
The IEC activities intended for schoolchildren include presentations on rekindling values for the environment, understanding the value of the environment and natural resources, and disaster preparedness and management.
Also, videos and coloring books featuring the environment and natural resources were distributed and presented. Pinas Basura Buster (PBB), the icon for the Department's ecological solid waste management advocacy campaign was likewise featured during the activity.
In Maasin, the local government unit (LGU) joined the activity and donated waste bins labeled separately for proper waste segregation.
The school heads expressed appreciation to the DENR and its bureaus for reaching out to schools and exerting efforts to educate the children on environmental protection and sustainability.
The IEC activities in Southern Leyte, attended by around two hundred (200) pupils were conducted to increase environmental awareness.
The ENR Ambassador Philippine Junior Jaycess - Leytean partnered with DENR Regional Office VIII, EMB 8, CENRO Palo, barangay local government unit of Paglaum, and people's organization Paglaum Farmers Association for their '𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘮 𝘔𝘰, 𝘉𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘨 𝘔𝘰' Project.
Held on Earth Day, the '𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘮 𝘔𝘰, 𝘉𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘨 𝘔𝘰' Project centered on tree nurturing activities including mulching, ring weeding, and pruning within Enhanced National Greening Program (ENGP) sites in Barangay Paglaum, Tacloban City. This was conducted to ensure that the growth of the seedlings planted under the ENGP is maintained and sustained.
An environmental talk on rekindling values in caring for the environment, biodiversity conservation, and the Tayo ang Kalikasan was likewise held during the day.
The tree nurturing activity and environmental talk was participated by senior high school students of the Leyte National High School, officials of Barangay Paglaum, and members of the people's organization Paglaum Farmers Association.
