Women's Month Celebration: Tree Planting at Barangay 89, Payapay, San Jose, Tacloban City

tree planting payapay san joseIn celebration of the Women's Month 2016, over two hundred (200) volunteers, most of them women, came together from the different sectors of society in Tacloban City to plant around 1,000 talisay seedlings in the beach forest areas of Barangay 89, Payapay, San Jose, Tacloban City.

The activity spearheaded by the Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) intends to show and strengthen the role played by women in environmental protection and natural resources conservation. DENR 8 Regional Director Leonardo Sibbaluca said, "the tree planting activity is also a way of recognizing and valuing women as partners in the Department's advocacies for a greener and healthier environment.

According to Leyte PENR Officer Ranulfo Arbiol, the 1 hectare area in Brgy. Payapay planted with talisay seedlings this Women's Month is part of the beach forest areas developed and maintained under the Leyte Gulf Mangrove and Beach Forest Rehabilitation Project. This hopes to develop a beach forest and mangrove forest which shall serve as buffer for the people especially in the hardest hit provinces by Super Typhoon Yolanda - Leyte, Eastern Samar, Samar.
