birdsThe Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Maasin, Southern Leyte recently released various species of birds into the richly forested Mt. Nacolod.

Freed into its natural habitat were six (6) Brahminy kite, one sea serpent eagle, one Philippine hawk eagle, 3 black chinned fruit dove, and 2 brown eared doves. These birds were temporarily kept at the Maasin Zoo.

The City of Maasin in cooperation with the local government unit of Sogod, Southern Leyte assisted the CENRO Maasin in releasing the captured wildlife.

Prior to the release, lectures were conducted on the importance of wildlife to the ecosystem as well as the penalties that comes with wildlife abuses consistent with RA 9147 or the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act. Conducted by DENR personnel , this was attended by the barangay local government unit of Kanangkaan in Sogod, Southern Leyte, members of people’s organizations, and the media. The officials and the local community of Kanangkaan are seen as key players in the protection of Mt. Nacolod, a key biodiversity area which is home to various species of wildlife.

Tacloban City communities join this year’s #InternationalCoastalCleanUp activities. DENR Region 8, together with other government agencies and private institutions joined hands in cleaning up the coastal areas and waterways within the city.

DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu recently visited the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of Samar in Catbalogan City. During his interface with DENR employees in Samar province, Secretary Cimatu laid his plans to help reduce poverty. Among these are increasing livelihood opportunities through the Enhanced National Greening Program (E-NGP), reinventing mining to ensure that the country’s mineral resources will benefit the people without compromising the environment, and promoting cacao commodity to augment the livelihood of NGP PO beneficiaries in Samar.
