MahagnaoFestival

“Sining ak kultura para sa kalikasan” highlighted this year's Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park (MVNP) Outdoor Festival in Burauen and La Paz, Leyte.

Spearheaded by DENR’s Leyte Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) and the local government units of Burauen and La Paz in Leyte, students were invited to join in a painting competition and traditional Filipino games (laro ng lahi) held within the MVNP. An open-air market showcasing local delicacies, indigenous foods, agricultural products, fresh water fish and other aquatic products was also set-up by the locals for the visitors and festival spectators.

The event first held in 2016, is conducted every 3rd of February to commemorate the proclamation of the Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park as a protected area under the National Integrated Protected Area System (NIPAS) Act of 1992. This also seeks to showcase the resources within the protected area and its ecotourism potentials which offer an opportunity for the community to be one with nature. The activity is likewise expected to raise the environmental awareness of the community and intensify collaborative efforts to preserve and protect the Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park.

Proclaimed as one of the region's seven protected areas, Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park is endowed with diverse range of floral and faunal species. It exhibits natural stands of century old trees, volcano, lakes, hot springs, waterfalls and a fresh and clean atmosphere. ###
