The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in region 8 highlights the celebration of this year’s Philippine Arbor Day by spearheading a tree planting activity at Brgy. Salvacion, Palo, Leyte.

         The event was participated by over two hundred (200) volunteers from the Philippine Army, Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Education (DepEd), local government unit of Palo, barangay local government unit of Salvacion, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Tacloban Chapter, Pepsi Cola, Office of Leyte 1st District Representative Yedda Romualdez, DENR regional office, CENRO Palo, PENRO Leyte, Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), and the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

         Around seven hundred fifty (750) talisay seedlings were planted by the participants in a 2-hectare area which forms part of the four (4) hectares beach forest site in Brgy. Salvacion established under the Leyte Gulf Mangrove and Beach Forest Rehabilitation Project in 2014.

         According to Forester Wilfredo Lacambra of DENR CENRO Palo, said project site has been planted with around eight thousand five hundred (8,500) beach forest seedlings since it was established. He also added that the growth of the seedlings in the area is high at eighty percent.

          Leyte Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Ranulfo Arbiol said, "we are grateful with the support of our partners in ensuring that the objectives of the Leyte Gulf Mangrove and Beach Forest Rehab Project is met by joining replanting activities in the area even after the project has been completed.” “We need to maintain the site to safeguard the coastal communities in the area from the ill-effects of climate change such as storm surge", he adds.

         Philippine Arbor Day is celebrated every 25th of June per Presidential Proclamation 643 signed by President Gloria M. Arroyo by planting trees and ornamental plants and other forms of relevant activities that rehabilitate and re-green our environment.
