For its part, the DENR shall be responsible for the implementation of the Enhanced National Greening Program, as well as intensifying forest protection and enhancing biodiversity conservation and preservation through ecotourism development. It shall develop ecotourism sites by providing protected area facilities and strengthening capacities of people’s organizations towards self-sustainability. The agency shall likewise improve land administration and management, conduct environmental advocacies, and implement other ENR plans in the province.

 

Ms. Corazon Makabenta, Development Management Officer of DENR 8 who represented Regional Director Leonardo Sibbaluca during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding said, the merging of the different sectors will strengthen the preservation and protection of the environment and implementation of DENR programs and projects in Samar where the largest protected area of the region, the Samar Island Natural Park (SINP) is located.

 

Other sectors who partnered with the provincial government of Samar through the SFC were the Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc., and Samar State University (SSU).

 

The convergence of different sectors to support the Spark Samar Development Agenda was initiated by the provincial government of Samar through Governor Sharee Ann Tan Delos Santos.

Owing to unrelenting intelligence and forest protection efforts, CENRO Dolores through CENR Officer Roseller E. Cay, was able to seize six (6) undocumented chainsaws purportedly being used in illegal cutting of forest products. These are currently deposited at PENRO Eastern Samar for safekeeping pending final disposition.

COMBATTING MARINE POLLUTION Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu leads the global discussion on combating marine pollution during the Leaders’ Breakfast meeting held Sunday at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.  With theme, “Towards a Pollution-Free Planet,” the meeting was attended by environment ministers, international organizations, non-government organizations and the private sector. Cimatu underscored during the meeting the continuing efforts of the local government units in addressing plastic waste, as well as private sector’s initiatives in providing for commercially-viable and environment-friendly plastic alternatives. The Leaders’ Breakfast meeting precedes the 12th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMSCOP12) hosted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) from 23-28 October at the PICC. ###
